One of the things I was most nervous about for my upcoming summer as a law clerk at a “big” law firm was keeping track of all my summer assignments. At a firm it’s pretty common to have multiple assignments at one time, with some being due immediately and other being long term projects that must be completed by the end of the summer. To avoid missing a deadline (or completely forgetting about an assignment) I decided to keep a running spreadsheet of all of my assignments.
My spreadsheet allows me to keep track of each one of my summer assignments as well as; the date it’s assigned, the attorney who assigned it, the due date, some brief notes, my execution plan, and the weeks I have left to complete the assignment.
In the planning section, I briefly outline my plan for completing the assignment. I make sure to give myself plenty of wiggle room in case a more pressing assignment pops up (it happens all the time!). The finished product ends up looking something like the table below.
For those of you working at at an internship this summer how do you stay organized? Let me know below!
