Gucci Dionysus Review

Last year, I finally bit the bullet and bought my first designer handbag. I researched for months before I finally settled on a stunning Gucci Dionysus Leather Mini Bag. If you’re looking for an honest opinion on one of Gucci’s newer classic handbags look no further than my Gucci Dionysus Review.

The Good

As I mentioned above, the Gucci Dionysus was my very first designer handbag. I wanted to reward myself for passing the bar (you can read more about my experience studying for the bar here). Also, I wanted to spend the “bar bonus” I received from my law firm in a memorable way. I considered a bunch of designer bags before I landed on the Gucci Dionysus. It was on the lower end of the price spectrum for a designer bag and simply stunning.

The Bad

My love affair with my Gucci Dionysus ended pretty quickly lol. I wore it a handful of times before I noticed that one of the Swarovski crystals on the tiger head closure had fallen off. I was incredibly upset, but found the missing crystal in my home. The next weekend I took the bag back to my local Gucci at Saks.

The sales associate at Gucci told me I couldn’t return the bag because 30 days had passed and I couldn’t exchange the bag because it was damaged. I was told that I could have the bag repaired but it would take 3 to 4 months. I didn’t want to be without my bag for 3 to 4 months. So, ultimately I decided to have the bag repaired locally.

The Ugly: My first time using my newly repaired bag, another (different) Swarovski crystal fell out. I hate to be over dramatic but I was devastated. I thought I could wear this bag for years not ten times.

After looking around online I discovered that it wasn’t uncommon for the Dionysus Leather Mini Bag to lose it’s Swarovski crystals. Many other women were in the same predicament as me. They had a  bag that was “too damaged” to return and “too old” to exchange.

The Verdict

Ultimately, I do not recommend the Gucci Dionysus Leather Mini Bag. Although it is one of the more “affordable” designer hand bags, it’s grossly overpriced for such a poor quality product. Especially when there are so many high quality designer handbags on the market. (If you love the look of this bag consider the Gucci Mini Shoulder Bag which is essentially the same bag without the crystals).

Additionally, the fact that Gucci wasn’t willing to allow me to return a product that should have never passed quality control makes me not want to spend any more money with the brand. At the end of the day I learned a very valuable lesson that not every designer bag is an “investment.”

Thank you for your honest review. That’s too bad. I was thinking of taking the plunge, but after reading your review, I do not know if I want to spend so much money on a bag that will require more money for upkeep and maintenance.

Did you notice any wear of the leather near where you lock and unlock the bag? I have had mine for 2 months and already noticed drying of the leather. Also any recommendations for how to avoid this would be great!

      Appreciate it!

Unfortunately I didn’t have the bag long enough to run into that issue. If I were you I would go back to the store you bought it from and ask what leather treatment they recommend.
