If you care about haircare Olaplex is a name you’ve probably heard before. The Olaplex treatment is a three step process that repairs bonds broken by chemical and heat damage. I’ve heard rave reviews on how Olaplex transformed chemically dyed hair, but didn’t know if it would have the same effects on natural hair. Last month, I decided to buy the entire Olaplex product line and do an Olaplex natural hair review. I purchased; Hair Perfector No. 3, No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo, No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner, and the No. 6 Bond Smoother. If you want to find out how the Olaplex treatment worked on my natural hair keep reading.
Hair Perfector No. 3: This product was what brought me to the Olaplex line. The Hair Perfecter is a bond treatment that repairs and strengthens damaged hair. The instructions say to use Olaplex 3 for a minimum of 10 minutes so, my first time I used it for 10 minutes. When I rinsed Olaplex 3 out the results shocked me. Pieces of my hair that had been heat damaged (and I had considered cutting) regained their curl. And the overall shape of my hair transformed.
The second time I used Olaplex 3 I left it in for 3 hours. Again, the results impressed me. My hair looked shiny, healthy, and more defined than it did before. I love a product that actually does what it says it’s going to do. And the effect Olaplex 3 had on my hair blew me away. That being said, some maybe turned away by the small amount of product and the high price. Although, it comes in small bottle, I think you could get 4-6 applications out of the bottle. And I would advise using it for more than 10 minutes to get the most bang for your buck.
No. 4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo: The next step in the Olaplex process is the Bond Maintenance Shampoo. The Shampoo is paraben-free, sulfate-free, and phthalate-free and repairs hair by re-linking broken bonds. A little of this product goes a long way and works into a nice lather. I think the Olaplex 4 worked really well and got my hair squeaky clean.
No. 5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner: The Bond Maintenance Conditioner is also paraben-free, sulfate-free, and phthalate-free and is suppose to repair hair by re-linking broken bonds. Olaplex 5 is thick like a deep conditioner and I used it for around 10 minutes. When I rinsed out the Conditioner, I expected my hair to feel way more hydrated/soft than it felt.
I ultimately ended up using one of Live Clean‘s hydrating conditioners (I wrote all about that brand here) after Olaplex 5 to get my hair how I like it. Although, I had to use a second conditioner after Olaplex 5, I would still recommend Olaplex 5. I truly believe in using an entire product line to get the best results and I do think it’s a necessary step.
No. 6 Bond Smoother: The Bond Smoother is the final step. The Bond Smoother is a leave in cream that strengthens, hydrates, and moisturizes. The Olaplex website says Olaplex 6 also “speeds up blow drying times while smoothing.” This statement gave me the impression that it should be used on straightened hair but I tried it on my wash and go too.
When I used the Olaplex 6 on my wash n go, it left my hair defined, frizz free, but incredibly dry. I recommend mixing or layering or mixing this product with your favorite moisturizing cream, to keep your naturally curly hair hydrated. Or skipping it all together lol
When I used Olaplex 6 on my hair before straightening, I the results impressed me. The Olaplex 6 left my hair so silky smooth even my husband noticed the difference. If you have natural hair and you like to keep it straight, I definitely recommend incorporating the Bond Smoother into your routine.
Final Verdict? As a natural who frequently wears my hair straight I think the Olaplex treatment will become a staple in my natural hair routine. I have quite a bit of heat damage in my hair and, though it doesn’t bother me, I’m glad to have found a way to address it. Although some may be turned off by Olaplex’s high prices and tiny bottles, I think it’s well worth the price.
If you don’t want to buy the whole line but would love to incorporate Olaplex products into your routine I would highly recommend you purchase the Hair Perfector No. 3 and the No. 6 Bond Smoother. If you found my Olaplex natural hair review helpful please let me know below!
